Welcome to The Beech Room and The Maple Room

Your child will spend their ante-pre school and pre-school years in the purposefully laid out rooms where the day will be structured around the curriculum. In this area of the nursery our aim is also to provide a warm caring and secure environment, gradually preparing your child for the next step in life of school.

Whilst the child is still very young and requires plenty of opportunity to play freely, emphasis is placed on learning through structured play and in small groups. The child will be encouraged to experiment with arts and crafts, spend time in the book corner, home corner, cooking, singing and dancing. In the computer area IT skills are taught at an early age where the children can take advantage of a selection of educational computer programmes. The children have also shown themselves to be very competent with the digital cameras and use these regularly. The children are involved with the nursery’s Eco-Schools initiative and recycling and composting are an every day event in nursery. The Beech and Maple Rooms have direct access to the nursery garden and play area and spend a great deal of time outside playing and gardening.

The Beech and Maple Room staff have adopted the Curriculum For Excellence documents and use the Learning Outcomes in planning activities for the children.

Acrewood Nursery has developed a transition programme to make the move from nursery to primary 1 that little bit easier for the children. Contact is made with all schools a couple of terms before school starts and visits are arranged to school, where your child can go along with a member of staff to view their school, meet the teachers etc. There will also be opportunities for you to visit school with your child.

At the end of your child’s nursery day, you can expect to have verbal feedback from staff regarding your child’s day but you will also receive a daily diary with information written in it such what your child did that day, what they had to eat etc. Parents are welcome to add their own reports to this for staff to find out what your child did over the weekend.

The ratio in the Beech and Maple Rooms are one adult for every 8 children. These are the guidelines set by the Scottish Care Commission.
